Issue 23: Design Your Web3 Career Path

Hey there. Welcome back! This week, we’re focused on something foundational: taking ownership of your path. Web3 doesn’t offer ladders. It offers possibility. The challenge is knowing how to design a career that feels purposeful, not reactive. Let me start by sharing what that looked like for me.

From Law to Smart Contracts

Before I became a blockchain engineer, I was a lawyer. And before that, I was a software engineer. Even while I was deep in law books and client files, I never stopped building side projects. I’ve always been drawn to technology, especially where it intersects with trust, systems, and people.

My first brush with blockchain was with Bitcoin. But when I discovered Ethereum and the idea of smart contracts, something clicked. I started sketching concepts for a chain-of-custody system for legal documents, using Hyperledger Fabric. The more I learned, the clearer it became: blockchain wasn’t just a novel tech stack. It was a paradigm shift.

I began following Ethereum developers on Twitter and slowly built some connections. Eventually, one of those connections opened the door to my first Web3 role. I was excited to join the Truffle Suite team at ConsenSys as a Senior Blockchain Engineer.

It wasn’t a straight line. But it was a designed path; one shaped by curiosity, alignment, and the decision to reconnect with the kind of work that lit me up.

You Can Design Your Career (Even in Chaos)

My shift, from law to Web3, wasn’t just about gaining technical skills. It happened because I got intentional. I paused. I reflected. And I designed a path that made sense for me.

And that’s the key: in Web3, there’s no default route. Roles evolve. Narratives shift. Without direction, it’s easy to drift. You chase what’s urgent or popular instead of what’s meaningful.

But with a bit of structure, you can step off the hamster wheel and build with purpose. Designing your career doesn’t mean having every step figured out. It means having a compass; having a way to make decisions that keep you aligned with your vision and values.

Start with three simple questions:

1. What do I want long-term? (Vision)

2. What matters to me right now? (Values)

3. What’s the next meaningful step? (Action)

When I asked those questions, my answers led me out of the courtroom and into smart contracts. Yours might lead you somewhere entirely different, and that’s the point. The best Web3 careers aren’t copied. They’re created.

The 3x3 Career Design Grid

Grab paper, Notion, or a whiteboard and build a 3x3 grid:

Once filled, look for patterns and intersections.
Then ask:

• What opportunities are already within reach?

• What gaps can I close with a single experiment?

• What’s one decision I can make this month that aligns with all three columns?
